How to Make a Hanging Tobacco Basket for Valentine’s Day using a repurposed tobacco basket. Faux pink and white peonies, a berry stem, and fern leaves embellish this basket, creating a whimsical and sweet vibe for Valentine’s Day. Additionally, it can be displayed throughout the spring!
I’m in love with this repurposed hanging tobacco basket! I found this hanging tobacco basket at Hobby Lobby. I initially purchased it to use as a mail drop. However, I recently thought, “that would make a cute Valentine’s Day basket.” And, it did!
I was able to use some faux peonies and faux fern leaves I already had at home. Wonderful! And, together with a leftover faux berry stem from my fireplace mantel decor, the idea was coming together.
Incorporating the berry stem in the basket really helped to create a cohesive look with my Valentine decor.

Supplies
If possible, repurpose and use what you already have to save money. Search through your supplies of faux florals, greenery, ribbon, etc., to see what look you can create for free!
I was able to compile most of these items from what I had at home. I made the bow out of burlap with pink lace wired ribbon. It is so pretty and really completed the look.
What you’ll need to replicate this Hanging Tobacco Basket for Valentine’s Day:
- Hanging tobacco basket. I purchased mine from Hobby Lobby, see here.
- 3 faux peony flower stems
- 3 faux fern leaves
- 1 faux berry stem
- 2, 3 1/2 inch blocks of floral foam
- Brown craft paper, or brown paper bag, cut to fit the basket
- Wire cutters
- Wired ribbon of choice, if desired
How to Make a Hanging Tobacco Basket for valentine’s day
First, gather your supplies.
1. Cut a piece of brown craft paper or a brown paper bag. The paper will be used to cover the foam in the bottom of the basket. Measure and cut the paper to fit across the bottom and sides of the basket.
2. Crumple the paper into a ball, uncrumple, and repeat until the desired distressed look is achieved.
3. Place the paper inside the bottom of the basket.
4. Cut the stems of the faux florals with the wire cutters. Consider that the florals, leaves, and berry stem will need to be long enough to be visible on the upper part of the basket.
5. Using a leftover piece of the stem, insert it into the two foams block. This will help hold the blocks together when placing the arrangement into the basket.
6. Determine where you want the florals and greenery to go. Push the end of the berry stem and fern leaves into the foam. I decided to put the fern leaves in the back, then the berries, then the peonies in the front.
7. Add the faux peonies. Insert the peonies in front of the berry stem and leaves. I chose a pink peony in the center and two white peonies on either side.
8. Once you are happy with how the arrangement looks, place it into the basket. Adjust the brown paper to hide any of the foam blocks.
Look how cute it is! You can leave it just as is. However, I decided to add a bow with some burlap and pink lace ribbon.
Make and Attach the Bow
I made a small and simple bow with two loops on each side. I attached it to the bottom half of the basket using floral wire. It’s a happy little bow.
Display for Valentine’s Day & Spring
Not only does this make a whimsical and sweet hanging basket for Valentine’s Day, but it can also be displayed into the spring. Remove the bow, change out the flowers or bow, or leave as is!
This Hanging Tobacco Basket for Valentine’s Day was so easy to make. Not to mention, inexpensive! I repurposed a tobacco basket, florals, and greenery I already had at home.
The basket can be displayed on a wall, door, or propped up. I chose to hang it on the door to our master bedroom. (Command hooks work nicely for this purpose.)
So soft and subtle. Yet, adorable.
